The Templar's Market, iirc? I'll have to try and get to that,
it's not far from here.

I'll be there, too. Somebody will have to:
a) show Marco all the nice swords people are selling, and
b) tell him he can't afford them.

<eg>

Oh, and c) drive him there.

Well, I *could* walk, I guess. But it's nicer to have company.

So, did it work? Did you buy any?
There were lots of nice swords and bows and crossbows - I was
very tempted.

We should have arranged a time and place to meet (or even a
day). I'm only about 20 minutes from that area, so am
flexible on timings. Maybe next year?

The kids got wooden swords, and my daughter also bought a wooden
crossbow. It's powered by an elastic string, only, but I'm tempted to
make a proper bow of one of the pieces of yew I've got in the garage,
and replace the one that's there.

I was sorely tempted by a copule of sharp rapiers, but in the end I
managed to withstand the temptation. I was looking for a combat-safe
bearded axe, but didn't find any, so I'll have to order one.

Yes, both Marco and I suddenly remembered that as we were having a
snack, just before we were leaving, that you had said you were close by
(the recollection was brought on by the observation that a lot of the
people there looked like they could have been afpers). It was a little
late, by then, but having a little meet next year certainly sounds like
a good idea.

I'll make a note to stand well back..

I was suprised at how many double-entendres there were...
of which I'll only mention the lady with the nice jugs[1] ;-)

I probably walked past you half a dozen times without realising...

Next year sounds good, I'll be in touch.

I'll not let her use it on people - and she's sensible enough that she
wouldn't want to - and it wouldn't be that strong either. She's not,
fortunately, built like Detritus.

Probably. If you're going to the Con, we'll have to try to meet up so
we won't walk past each other again.

Great. I've got a horrible memory, so I'd be grateful for any memory
assistance you can give for next year.

We still have that longbow which came home from Blackbird Leys with
us...and the subsequent paraphernalia. How did you come by pieces of
yew sufficient for bow making?

At the last couple of Cons, the Treacle Mines (large room with tables
and space to move around for those who don't know it) has been used on
the Saturday evening for an Afparty. Run like a bit of a pot luck party
with people bringing along chocolate for tasting, cakes if they make
them, balloons etc. Would people be interested in something similar if
space/time is available?

It would need people willing to commit to some help with organising and
in particular to be willing to help clear up afterwards (bin liners,
paper plates, finish off the chocolate etc).

The penis mightier than the sword?

You guys ever get to play with it?

> How did you come by pieces of yew sufficient for bow making?

One of the nearby villages had to cut down a huge, old yew at the
churchyard, and I got to pick up a couple of sturdy branches.
Unfortunately, it had been cut up when I got there, so the pieces aren't
long enough for me, but at almost five foot I should be able something
for the daughter.

Yes, certainly.

Ah... I think I could manage the last of those.

OK I have to ask, even though I'll probably regret it.

Does the name come from the knives or were the knife designs created for
the name?

The knife is named after the bollocks, not the other way around. They
were popular from the 13th to the 18th century, but were in Vitorian
times referred to as "kidney daggers".

As far as I know, the name came from the shape of the hilt and guard,
but not from it's intended target. Or rather, that was only one of the
targets. They were useful for getting between pieces of plate armour,
and the groinal area has some large arteries.

My guess is that someone came up with the design and it simply became
popular because it was provocative. After some time, it was just
traditional, and nobody thought much about it.

I've seen some where the hilt has had a very prounounced and "lifelike"
pommel, and it's quite common to see, at fairs and markets where they're
sold, manly men inspecting the blade carefully, and giggly girls
studying the handles.
